Dolly Parton and James Patterson, two larger-than-life figures, combined their creative juices to produce a literary sensation that is perfect for a quick beach read – or poolside if you don’t want to get sand on the pages. Their joint project, titled “Run Rose Run”, had me hooked by the end of chapter one. It is not hard to see why readers far and wide give it good reviews. However, I do have to warn that it covers some dark topics.
At first glance, “Run Rose Run” may seem like a story that has been told before, but the truth is, it is much more than that. Dolly Parton’s voice contributes to the main character’s resilience and tells a story of the power of never giving up. Set in the backdrop of the rugged Appalachian Mountains, the story follows the life of a young woman who is faced with endless challenges and obstacles, and her journey to overcome them.
Patterson, a master of suspense, brings his signature writing style to the book, keeping readers turning the pages. Though it is Dolly Parton, the country music legend, adding a unique twist to the story with her witty and heartwarming quotes that will leave you chuckling and nodding in agreement. Though I have no proof of who came up with what, I thought I could tell some of the words she is responsible for. I do not think I have ever read “ugly as a box of armpits” in Patterson before so I am crediting that to Parton.
My favorite quote from one of the main characters I am also attributing to Parton.
“When someone doesn’t appreciate my advice the first time, I’m not dumb enough to give it again. I don’t waste my breath like that, not when there’s songs to be sung.”
Ruthanna Ryder
I like that quote because it is something that I have learned over the years. I can explain something to someone, but I no longer waste my time explaining it over and over. I realize that sometimes a person (myself included) has to hear a new idea several times for it to register. So now I just chalk it up to me being one of the several. It does no good for me to try to hammer away at it.
One of the key themes of the book is the importance of chasing your dreams and never giving up, no matter how difficult the road may seem. This message is conveyed through the main character whose determination and strength of character will inspire you to keep running towards your goal, only hopefully your obstacles are not as dire. Sometimes she is annoying, as main characters usually are. Most notably, she is stubborn when it comes to being honest and asking for and accepting help.
Beyond the engrossing plot and interesting characters, “Run Rose Run” also touches upon important social issues such as the struggle of women in male-dominated industries, the power of friendship and community support, and the existence of evil in the world. The book is a conversation starter, prompting readers to reflect on these issues. Suspension of disbelief if required for this book in places where it doesn’t make sense – but that’s why they call it fiction, right? Though perhaps the main character is more relatable to others than she is to me as I was born into a life of love and nurture with many opportunities rather than neglect, isolation, and limited opportunities.
Do not just take my review on it. “Run Rose Run” has received rave reviews from critics and readers alike, with many praising it as a must-read. The New York Times best-selling author, Stephen King, even called it “a powerful and moving story that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.” There are parts that I would like to remember and there are other parts that I do hope I forget. The ending would have been better if – spoiler alert – there was no prince charming(s) who came and saved the day. There are the usual themes that focus on looks, money, drugs, alcohol, and materialism, but also a unique little bit of lifestyle medicine sprinkled in with gardening and hints of ideas about good nutrition which you know I liked.
So whether you are a fan of Parton, Patterson, or simply in need of an quick beach read, “Run Rose Run” is a book that you might want to give a chance if you have not read it already. Especially if you are a Dolly Parton fan. It is a fast-paced, thought-provoking, and emotionally compelling journey that will transport you to another place and time for a little while if you pick it up. So go ahead, run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore or library and pack it in your bag and head for the beach. If, however, you are sensitive to dark themes – you should probably skip it.
If you have already read it, what was one of your favorite quotes?
